Poeta da velha escola, trata com mestria, mas sem fulgor notável, os temas habituais da poesia galante e palaciana. Carolina Michaëlis detecta na sua poesia influências do romance popular. Francisco Homem, seu filho e sucessor no cargo, é autor de seis composições, também insertas no Cancioneiro."
